Widespread Very Low Frequency Earthquakes (VLFEs) Activity Offshore Cascadia

چکیده

A significant amount of stress in the Cascadia subduction zone (CSZ) is released by different forms slow earthquakes including tremors, low-frequency earthquakes, and very (VLFEs)—all occurring onshore at deeper part transition zone. Their activity offshore, however, remains elusive. We discover widespread occurrence discrete VLFEs offshore using ocean-bottom seismometers. Barring occasional regular fast are only seismic indicators offshore. Using centroid moment tensor inversion matched filtering, we detect sequences 12 distinct families VLFEs. The northern CSZ have focal mechanisms consistent with area's deformation. Interestingly, southern show strike-slip faulting, attributed to faults, sediment consolidation, bending, transpressional regimes created complex plate tectonics. It challenges a canonical view seismogenic characterized frictionally homogeneous fault segment producing earthquakes.

Distribution of low-frequency earthquakes accompanying the very low frequency earthquakes along the Ryukyu Trench

This study investigated the activity and distribution of low-frequency earthquakes (LFEs) accompanying the very low frequency earthquakes (VLFEs) in the central and southern Ryukyu Trench. This investigation was based on shortperiod seismometer waveforms obtained by the Japan Meteorological Agency from April 2004 to December 2015. The LFEs were detected using the Envelope Correlation Method, an...

Tidal modulation and triggering of low-frequency earthquakes in northern Cascadia

We analyze the influence of Earth and ocean tides on the triggering of low-frequency earthquakes (LFEs) in northern Cascadia using three LFE catalogs for southern Vancouver Island and Washington state from episodic tremor and slip events between 2003 and 2013. Sensitivities of LFE families to tidally induced fault normal stress, updip shear stress (UDSS), and corresponding time derivatives are ...

Scattered waves from low-frequency earthquakes and plate boundary structure in northern Cascadia

[1] We use 3-D waveform modeling of LFEs (lowfrequency earthquakes) to investigate their relation to plate boundary structure along a linear transect in northern Cascadia. To account for crustal velocity heterogeneity, a smoothed 3-D model of subduction zone structure is assembled that incorporates constraints from regional tomographic and plate boundary models. Scattered phases within LFE wave...

Low-Frequency Properties of Intermediate-Focus Earthquakes

Intermediate-focus earthquakes are known to show features such as nondouble-couple focal mechanisms that indicate source complexities. To characterize these features, we have systematically studied the low-frequency radiation from 108 intermediate-focus earthquakes recorded by high-performance seismic networks from 1989–1997 whose total moment was 3 10 N m. We determined frequency-dependent foc...
